CHRIST CHURCH SHOOTERS HILL
Sunday 27th October 2019
Last Sunday after Trinity
Welcome to Christ Church
Please, help us to create a prayerful atmosphere before the service. Thank you!
If you are new, please, fill in a sheet (blue basket @ door). We welcome children in church. We now have a children’s corner at the side of the church where they will find toys, books, colouring, activity sheets and a play mat for babies. If your child(ren) become(s) noisy, it might be an idea to take them out until they settle. Feel free to use the hall.
Introit Hymn 90 Come down, o Love Divine
The Collect
Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning:
help us so to hear them, to read, mark, learn and inwardly digest them that, through patience, and the comfort of your holy word, we may embrace and for ever hold fast the hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
First Reading Ecclesiasticus 35: 12-17
Give to the Most High as he has given to you, and as generously as you can afford. For the Lord is the one who repays, and he will repay you sevenfold.
Do not offer him a bribe, for he will not accept it; and do not rely on a dishonest sacrifice; for the Lord is the judge, and with him there is no partiality. He will not show partiality to the poor; but he will listen to the prayer of one who is wronged. He will not ignore the supplication of the orphan, or the widow when she pours out her complaint.
Second Reading 2 Timothy 4: 6-8, 16-18
As for me, I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
At my first defence no one came to my support, but all deserted me. May it not be counted against them! But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and save me for his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Gradual Hymn 288 King of glory, king of peace
Gospel Luke 18: 9-14
Jesus also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and regarded others with contempt: ‘Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax-collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying thus, “God, I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax-collector. I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income.” But the tax-collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his breast and saying, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner!” I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather than the other; for all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted.’
Offertory Hymn: 83 Christ’s is the world
Communion Hymn 287 Just as I am (tune 2)
69 Breathe on me (tune 2)
Post Communion Prayer
God of all grace, your Son Jesus Christ fed the hungry with the bread of his life and the word of his kingdom: renew your people with your heavenly grace, and in all our weakness sustain us by your true and living bread;
who is alive and reigns, now and for ever. Amen.
Thanksgiving Hymn 188 Guide me O thou great redeemer
Keeping Christ Church Solvent
Thanks to all who, in the last 12 months have responded in some way to help balance the books. We have some new standing orders and some increased standing orders or planned giving envelopes. We still have a way to go! Yet to respond? It’s not too late. If 50 people give an extra £1 a week - that’s an extra £3,250 (with gift aid). That’s a start.
Please, speak to Wendy Holloway, Catherine Champney or Sue Peach about ways in which you can help.
Exploring Faith
The morning group will meet at 9.10am on 28th October & 18th November. The evening group will meet at 8pm on 18th November. No meetings in December. The groups will continue in the new year. Do let Mtr Ariadne know if you are interested in joining.
Pantomime
Enid has booked seats for us at the Bob Hope Theatre, Eltham for Snow White and the 7 Dwarves on 12th January 2020 at 2pm. Tickets cost £13 for adults; £10 for children & concessions. Please, let Enid or Mtr Ariadne know if you would like to buy tickets. We went to the Bib Hope Theatre for the first time, last year. It is less professional than Greenwich Theatre, but it was really good for children – especially slightly younger ones.
Site Development
Good news! The Diocese have given us positive feedback about the proposals for our site. We expect the Diocese to give us formal approval soon. We are working with a very keen and pro-active architect/developer, who is anxious to start the project. We hope to be able to present more developed plans before too long.
Working Party
The next Working Party will be on Saturday 2nd November between 8.30 and 11.30am. There will be lots of leave clearing to be done. Do, please, come and help. Bring a pair of gardening gloves. Children are welcome to come and help. Thank you!
Wine Tasting
An English wine tasting evening from Wildwood Vineyard on Saturday 16th November 7.30-9.30pm. Come and enjoy an evening hearing about Wildwood Vineyard and tasting their wines. Tickets £10. Please contact Enid on 07880 662348
