CHRIST CHURCH SHOOTERS HILL
Sunday 13th January 2018
Baptism of Christ, Year C
Welcome to Christ Church
Please, help us to create a prayerful atmosphere before the service. Thank you!
If you are new, please, fill in a sheet (blue basket @ door). We welcome children in church. We now have a children’s corner at the side of the church where they will find toys, books, colouring, activity sheets and a play mat for babies. If your child(ren) become(s) noisy, it might be an idea to take them out until they settle. Feel free to use the hall.
Introit Hymn 90 Come down O love divine
The Collect
Eternal Father, who at the baptism of Jesus revealed him to be your Son, anointing him with the Holy Spirit: grant to us, who are born again by water and the Spirit, that we may be faithful to our calling as your adopted children; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
First Reading Isaiah 43: 1-7
1Thus says the LORD, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour. I give Egypt as your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in exchange for you. Because you are precious in my sight, and honoured, and I love you, I give people in return for you, nations in exchange for your life. Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you; I will say to the north, ‘Give them up’, and to the south, ‘Do not withhold; bring my sons from far away and my daughters from the end of the earth – everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.’
Second Reading Acts 8: 14-17
When the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. The two went down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit (for as yet the Spirit had not come upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus). Then Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
Gradual Hymn 401 On Jordan’s Bank
Gospel Luke 3: 15-17, 21-22
(In the wilderness John proclaimed a baptism of repentance.) As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, ‘I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing-fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing-floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.’ Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.’
Offertory Hymn 287 (tune 2) Just as I am
Communion Hymn 69a Breath on me, breath of God
454 Spirit of the living God
Post Communion Prayer
Lord of all time and eternity, you opened the heavens and revealed yourself as Father in the baptism of Jesus your beloved Son: by the power of your Spirit complete the heavenly work of our rebirth through the waters of the new creation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Exploring Faith
There are two Exploring Faith Groups. Both meet once a month, in the vicarage. One meets on Monday evenings at 8pm and the other at 9.10am. The evening group have been going since November and their next meeting will be on 14th January. The other group will start on 28th January. Do let Mtr Ariadne know if you would like to join the new group.
Special Collections
We are grateful for those who have contributed to our special collections. in the last 3 months. We have an additional £611 (including the gift aid yet to be claimed). But at this rate of giving we will fall far short of our original target of £8k in 12 months.
Our financial position at the end of 2018 is also not robust and it's estimated our revenue account will be in deficit by an estimated £9k.
The start of a new financial year offers the opportunity for each of us to consider our level of giving and the frequency of our giving and to make a real difference to our ability to serve the community and parish here at Christ Church. Please take the separate leaflet home with you and make a new year resolution to be part of the solution in putting finance on a firm footing.
Christingle
Our Christingle service will be on 3rd February 2019 at 9.30am. There are candle-shaped boxes available from the back of church for children to take home with them and to fill with coins. Children who attend Christ Church School were given one, last Wednesday. There are also special Gift Aid envelopes available if you’d like to give a larger donation. All money given will go to the Children’s Society who do fantastic work. They fight child poverty and neglect; they work to prevent child sexual exploitation; they have produced resources to help address mental health issues in young people – to name just a few things. Please, do all you can to support the very important work that they do. And do come to our Christingle service. Every child will be given a Christingle to take home with them.
