CHRIST CHURCH SHOOTERS HILL

Sunday 3rd July 2016

St Thomas, Year C

Welcome to Christ Church

Please, help us to create a prayerful atmosphere before the service. Thank you!

If you are new please fill in a sheet (blue basket @ door). We welcome children in church. We now have a children’s corner at the side of the church where they will find toys, books, colouring, activity sheets and a play mat for babies. If they become noisy, it might be an idea to take them out until they settle.

The Collect

Almighty and eternal God, who, for the firmer foundation of our faith, allowed your holy apostle Thomas to doubt the resurrection of your Son till word and sight convinced him: grant to us, who have not seen, that we also may believe and so confess Christ as our Lord and our God; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

First Reading Habbakuk 2: 1-4

I will stand at my watch-post, and station myself on the rampart; I will keep watch to see what he will say to me, and what he will answer concerning my complaint. Then the LORD answered me and said: Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so that a runner may read it. For there is still a vision for the appointed time; it speaks of the end, and does not lie. If it seems to tarry, wait for it; it will surely come, it will not delay. Look at the proud! Their spirit is not right in them, but the righteous live by their faith.

Second Reading Ephesians 2: 19-22

You are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. In him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling-place for God.

Gospel John 20: 24 - 29

Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, ‘We have seen the Lord.’ But he said to them, ‘Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.’ A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ Then he said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.’ Thomas answered him, ‘My Lord and my God!’ Jesus said to him, ‘Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.’

Post Communion Prayer

Almighty God, who on the day of Pentecost sent your Holy Spirit to the apostles with the wind from heaven and in tongues of flame, filling them with joy and boldness to preach the gospel: by the power of the same Spirit strengthen us to witness to your truth and to draw everyone to the fire of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Parish Survey

Thank you very much for filling in one of our surveys. If you haven’t returned yours yet, would you, please, do so as soon as possible? Many thanks.

Confirmation Service

The Confirmation Service will be on July 17th at 9.30am. Several adults and young people will be confirmed and some children will be admitted to communion. Please, come and support these candidates, as they take a big step on their faith journey. There will be brunch after the service. Please, do and stay after the service to greet our Bishop and to congratulate the candidates. Do also, please, keep Tina, Han, Katie, Jasmine, Maia, Douglas, Mia, Spencer, James, Jack, Deji, Andre, Red, Elwood, Baydon, Kirsty and Scarlett in your prayers.

International Street Food Event

We are having our second International Street Food event on 10th July from 12.15pm.

Calling all cooks and bakers to produce fabulous dishes from cuisines from all over the world. Last year, we had Korean, West African, Chinese, Italian and British food. Can we better that this year? Do let Debs Dumville (deborah_maclaren@themediasaleshouse.co.uk) know if you can help (we need volunteers to sell cakes and tickets as well, so if you are culinary challenged there is still plenty you can do to help…) Thank you!

Pantomime

It’s still only May, but Enid has already booked this year’s Pantomime: Peter Pan, 4th December 2016 at Greenwich Theatre. If you are interested in buying a ticket, please, contact Enid (enidolding123@btinternet.com)

Working Party

A big thank you to those who came to help yesterday. Thank you for your hard work!

Ours is quite a big site and being on the edge of the woods means that we are constantly battling seedlings, brambles etc. While there is much more to being church than having nice grounds, it helps when the church grounds look neat and tidy and it is also safer. John and Robert are struggling to maintain the grounds by themselves and could use more helpers. At the beginning of this month, they managed to cut the grass at the front, but the grounds desperately need some weeding and the grounds behind the church need cutting, too. If you can help, please let John Halford know. Working Party is usually on the first Saturday of the month between 8.30am and 10am. Thank you.
