The Collect
Almighty God, who alone can bring order to the unruly wills and passions of sinful humanity: give your people grace so to love what you command and to desire what you promise, that, among the many changes of this world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
First Reading Ruth 1: 1-17
In the days when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land, and a certain man of Bethlehem in Judah went to live in the country of Moab, he and his wife and two sons. The name of the man was Elimelech and the name of his wife Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion; they were Ephrathites from Bethlehem in Judah. They went into the country of Moab and remained there. But Elimelech, the husband of Naomi, died, and she was left with her two sons. These took Moabite wives; the name of one was Orpah and the name of the other Ruth. When they had lived there for about ten years, both Mahlon and Chilion also died, so that the woman was left without her two sons or her husband. Then she started to return with her daughters-in-law from the country of Moab, for she had heard in the country of Moab that the Lord had had consideration for his people and given them food. So she set out from the place where she had been living, she and her two daughters-in-law, and they went on their way to go back to the land of Judah. But Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, ‘Go back each of you to your mother’s house. May the Lord deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead and with me. The Lord grant that you may find security, each of you in the house of your husband.’ Then she kissed them, and they wept aloud. They said to her, ‘No, we will return with you to your people.’ But Naomi said, ‘Turn back, my daughters, why will you go with me? Do I still have sons in my womb that they may become your husbands? Turn back, my daughters, go your way, for I am too old to have a husband. Even if I thought there was hope for me, even if I should have a husband tonight and bear sons, would you then wait until they were grown? Would you then refrain from marrying? No, my daughters, it has been far more bitter for me than for you, because the hand of the Lord has turned against me.’ Then they wept aloud again. Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth clung to her. So she said, ‘See, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her gods; return after your sister-in-law.’ But Ruth said, ‘Do not press me to leave you or to turn back from following you! Where you go, I will go; where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God. Where you die, I will die— there will I be buried. May the Lord do thus and so to me, and more as well, if even death parts me from you!’ If Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say there is no resurrection of the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, then our proclamation has been in vain and your faith has been in vain. We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified of God that he raised Christ – whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised. If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have died in Christ have perished. If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied. But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have died.
Second Reading 1 Cor 15: 12-20

They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. And all in the crowd were trying to touch him, for power came out from him and healed all of them. Then he looked up at his disciples and said: ‘Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. ‘Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. ‘Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. ‘Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Thanksgiving Hymn 405 One more step along the world
Lent
During Lent we will have 5 Saturday morning sessions on 9, 16, 23 March, 6, 13 April from 10 – 11am. We will have speakers talking to us about Amnesty International, homelessness, sustainable fashion and South African art and about refugees. There will be a children’s corner. There will also be refreshments.
Exploring Faith
The evening group will meet on 25th February. The morning group will meet on 11th March at 9.10am.
Fairtrade Fortnight
This year, Fairtrade Fortnight is from 25th February – 10th March. The focus this year is on cocoa producer who often only earn 74p a day. A living wage would be £1.86 a day. Chocolate producers often make quite a bit of money, but the cocoa producers get only a fraction of this. This week and next week, Mia, our Fairtrade Champion, will be selling Fairtrade goods from her stall in the hall. She will be selling Real Easter Eggs (that come with an Easter booklet), but it is also possible to order Real Easter Eggs via the order list in church. Mia has also put a display together in the hall about Fairtrade.
Volunteering Opportunities
At present, we are looking for: Wardens; Treasurer; USPG Champion; someone to print notice sheets; a Hall Manager; Social Media Manager. Please, speak to Sue Peach or Mtr Ariadne if you might be able to help. Thank you!
NEW CHURCH ELECTORAL ROLL!
Every Church of England parish has an electoral roll. Those on the electoral can vote in parish elections and stand for elections (church warden or PCC member). The church electoral roll also makes it possible for those who do not live in the parish, but who worship with us, to be married in this church. Every 6 years the electoral roll has to be redone completely. There is a notice up in the porch about this. Application forms are available near the entrance/exit of the church. If you have been baptised and you either live in the parish or worship with us (or both), please, complete a form and put it in the box by the door. The deadline is 3rd March 2019. Thank you.
Christ Church Bake Off
Our next Bake Off will be on 3rd March 2019, after the Pilgrim Eucharist. Do enter a cake in one of the three categories. If you are not a baker, you can still support us by coming to eat cake! £1.50 entrance will give you a generous piece of cake (and tea or coffee).
